Golf Report from Greta Barclay
Heydon Grange
clinched victory in their first appearance in the final of
the Grace Norman Trophy. In an exciting end to the match
Heydon Grange kept their heads to sink a birdie put on the
first extra hole to triumph over a strong Abbotsley side.
The semi finals and final took place at Bourn Golf Club. In the first semi-final Heydon Grange secured a 2-0 victory over Saffron Walden, with one match unfinished. In the second semi-final Abbotsley gained a 2-1 victory over The Links.
The final proved to be a nail-biting affair. In the first match Abbotsley pair of Sue Coxon and Susan Fenwich took an early lead against Dawn Glennie and Mai Smallman and ran out comfortable winners by 6 and 4. In the second match Captain Elaine Knobel-Forbes partnered by Roz McKenzie played some excellent golf to level the scores with a 3 and 2 victory over Mary Thompson and Paula Parker.
In the final match the Heydon Grange pairing of Tina Broadley and Eilan Moses went three up after the 12th hole but Elaine Miller and Carol Ombler put up a tremendous fight to reduce the arrears and levelled the match on the 17th. On the first extra hole, a par 3, the Abbotsley drive landed in the rough just short and right of the green. Tina Broadley hit a splendid drive onto the green. From a difficult lie Abbotsley's Elaine Miller chipped onto the green to leave Eilan Moses with a 10ft put for victory. Showing ice-cool nerves she sunk the birdie put to win the Grace Norman Trophy. Captain Elaine Knobel-Forbes said she was delighted with the performance of her team and of Margaret Bell and Tammini Hurst who played in the semi-final match.
