Another exciting finish decided
the outcome of this years Lady Captain’s shoot-out at Heydon Grange.
With 10 players starting the competition, a mixture of luck and good
fortune saw last years Lady Captain, Elaine Knobel-Forbes, pitted
against the incumbent Roz McKenzie at the 9th Hole. Both players
halved the hole at the first attempt and so they retuned to the 100
yard marker for the decider. With Knobel-Forbes leaving her ball to
the left of the green, McKenzie looked defeated as her ball spun off
the green and found the lake on the right. A rare error from too
much caution saw Knobel-Forbes’ approach to the flag still 9 feet
short. Following a drop into a difficult lie, McKenzie appeared to
have over-hit her shot as the ball flew from its resting place
beside the lake on a trajectory destined to clear the green, had the
flag pole not intervened; onlookers watched in amazement has the
ball dropped like a stone into the awaiting hole. With her remaining
putt sliding past the edge, Knobel-Forbes was left to ponder what
might have been as McKenzie (pictured below) took the title.
