All pairings struggled to make par over the Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire courses at Heydon Grange in the Blenheim Bowl qualifier for entry into the CAGU/Cambridge Evening News Foursomes Competition. With a gross score of 47 on the front 9, Gary Matthews and Paul Crawford had all but given up hope of any placing; but a gross 39 on the back nine was sufficient to give them the title with a net 75. Malcolm Knobel-Forbes and Steve King just took second place from Mel Marks and Tony Radford on count-back when both pairs scored a net 77.
